Want an RS4 or RS5 that’s had a carbonfibre festooning? Audi has revealed a pair of handsome devils that might be of interest to you.

Say hello to the RS4 and RS5 Carbon Editions, yours for £71,625 and £75,400 respectively. That’s an increase of £10,000 for the 4 and £12,500 for the 5, so what are you getting for your money? For starters, a snazzy carbonfibre roof.

Available only on the RS5, it cuts 3kg from the car’s weight figure. Meanwhile both models have the ‘Carbon Matt Aluminium Styling Pack’, which gives a CFRP (carbonfibre reinforced plastic) finish to the front spoiler, sill extensions and the rear diffuser.

The door mirror housings are CFRP, and you also get a bunch of CFRP inlays spread around the interior.

Then there are the wheels: these are the 20-inch rims available optionally on the standard car, and each is milled from a single piece of billet. They’re usually £2000 a set, and they drop 8kg from the car’s unsprung mass in total.

Together with the carbon roof, the wheels contribute to a 60kg drop for the RS4 compared to its predecessor, and an 80kg reduction for the RS5. If you have a good enough memory, you might remember those were the figures Audi quoted when the ‘normal’ versions of the cars were revealed - we just didn’t know at the time the reductions would only be possible with the carbon pack. Boo. Update: Audi UK has since clarified that the weight savings actually total 79kg for the RS4 and 96kg for the RS5 when going for the Carbon Editions.

I wonder if there’ll be a version of a car that doesn’t involve so much Carbon. Like say water… or wood, or even maybe chicken edition. 😛

The marketing team need a wake-up call. This is Audi, not McLaren. Their customers probably don’t give zwei Scheissen about tiny amounts of weight reduction. The RS5 is not a hard-edged sports coupe. It’s a cruiser designed for rapid pace with ease. A Carbon Edition would be great on something like an M4 or C63, but in my opinion it feels out of place on the RS5.
