Porsche Just Set A Road America Track Record With The 911 GT2 RS

As if we needed Porsche to underline the sheer speed of the 911 GT2, it broke the unofficial Road America production car lap record on just its second lap…

Porsche is on a mission to prove just how fast the 911 GT2 RS is, with yet another lap record.

This time it’s Road America at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, whose ultra-fast 4.048-mile layout of 14 turns was munched in 2m15.17s. That’s around two seconds faster than a privately-owned GT2 RS managed last year.

Porsche had already thrashed Road Atlanta’s production car lap record into line, beating the Dodge Viper ACR in the process.

Porsche’s riposte was driven by 1998 Le Mans class winner David Donohue, and it took just two laps for the American to handsomely beat the benchmark time. Porsche says that shows how ‘approachable’ the semi-slick-shod GT2 is, which really just means it’s not actively trying to hurt you…

It ran the new record time courtesy of special Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres, developed for the GT2 and GT3 RS with a stiffer sidewall and 10 per cent more corner contact patch than the standard Cup 2. They’re optional and come fully certified and road-legal, although owners report extreme sphincter stress when using them in the wet.

The GT3 RS also ran at Road America on the same day, punching a 2m18.57s lap on the same semi-slicks. Both times were validated by Racelogic staff who provided independently calibrated Vbox Video HD2 kit. Now we know who to thank for the insane footage…

Extreme sphincter stress has to be the phrase of the year.

It’s funny because that’s literally the only way to explain what a human would go through while driving any high horsepower car with slippery tires in the rain lol

Is that a saying for “having the seat literally press against you?”

Anyone else think it looks like it could go even faster? Some of the entry speeds into the corners looks almost pedestrian as mad as that sounds!

This is maybe the 5th or 6th article I’ve seen about this story today. Porsche is trying WAY too hard with their archetypically gawdy marketing machine. Elkhart isn’t exactly Nurburgring or Laguna Seca, maybe they set that record because very few production cars make it out there for benchmarks. Super hard to find data on production car times to compare as well..

Don’t get me wrong, great car, but they send a small army of journalists to a remote Indy track in Wisconsin to prove their car is quick? Mmkay but isn’t Stuttgart near the Nurburgring? Why Wisconsin? I’m just saying…

Well it went to the Nurburgring already, got the record, and lost it to the Aventador SVJ.

Koenigsegg, Bugatti, and Hennessy do the same thing lol wym they are trying WAY to hard?

Well the Corvette ZR1 tried on the Ring, but it couldn’t even beat the Viper ACR let alone the GT2 RS. i kept hearing “Oh the GT2 RS won’t be faster than the ZR1, the ZR1 has more horsepower” (only 50 more and it weighs a Devil’s house of a lot more)
