Gonna build a 190e Evo II clone, need help with picking engine to swap in

I’ve finally decided on my first actual big build and I’m gonna build an 190e Evo II clone like this one. I’ve worked on cars for a bit now but I’ve never done an engine or transmission swap. With that in mind which engine would you guys think would be ideal for a swap in terms of being able to put it in without a ton of modifications and fabricating to the car itself and whatever would be somewhat reliable with a decent power output. Preferably somewhere above 200-250hp. I’m definitely swapping in a manual tranny too but I just figured I’d try to find the matching one for whatever engine I choose. I’d also prefer to keep the engine and tranny German and my price limit for the engine and tranny would be about 3-4K which I understand isn’t a lot but for the kind of power I’m looking for it seems like a reasonable budget to me. Any and all suggestions are appreciated, I’m just trying to stay away from the typical swap builds because I want something a little different. Oh and before anyone suggests the 2.5l 16v engine from the original Evo II, I already looked into that and the cheapest engine I could find was $6,000 so I can’t afford it.

I think a V6 would be great.. Maybe from a VW Bora or an Audi A4

The Bora is available for 1700€ at ebay .. I don’t know anything about the reliability about this engine so you would have to ask around..

Mercedes M104 or the 3.6 L AMG from the W202 C36 AMG. I don’t think the AMG ever was offerd with a manual though…

These engines should not be to difficult to swap since they are from the same area of Mercedes, and will fit in the engine bay and probably with the engine mounts
The 190E came with a 2.6 version of the M103, and the M104 is based on that engine. The 3.6 AMG is actually also an M104 engine.
As a bonus you will be able to use genuine Mercedes quality parts

It fits to the 190E Cosworth manual transmission, I don’t know if it requires any persuasion, but people have been swapping these transmissions into the C36

I thought about doin a BMW based swap, I currently have an e36 318i and I test drove an 01 e46 330ci with that engine the other day and really liked it so that would be a pretty cool idea too

2.0l I4 from an Honda S2000, 1.8l Miata engine. you could bore them out to 2.5, turbo charge them… they already have 16 valves

I didn’t even think about boring them out and putting a good size turbo on it but I really like that idea

How about 3.2 from the Mk5 R32 Golf or the Audi TT. Not looking too expensive. Came with a manual and is german too.
