E36 Lemon - EU Road Trip - Need your help!

Hello fellow CTzens

I need your help!
Me and my friends are going on a roadtrip around southern Europe. We are going to buy an old BMW E36s and we want to drive them on the best driving roads in the EU. One of our goals is to visit the famous Stelvio Pass. But friend heard that there are some strict rules about emissions which won’t allow us to drive our old E36s on the Stelvio Pass. I was looking for more info on the internet but couldn’t find any.

Is that true?

This is our route:

Also if you have any ideas about good roadtrip cars, feel free to write it in the comments! :)
But we have a budget for a car, which is around 1 500–2 000 USD (1 000–1 500 GBP)
We need any car which is fun to drive in the hairpins and we prefer RWD car, so thats why we agreed on E36. They are cheap, rwd and parts are everywhere here in the Europe.

So, if anyone know if there are any emission restrictions on Stelvios Pass, plese let me know.

320 are bit expensive and rare here in Czech Republic. We want at least 318. I’d rather buy 318 in good condition than 320 rusted to the bone.

so estate or sedan? cause compact, coupe would be stupid for roadtrip…if you are more than two.

We prefer Coupe or Sedan over compact and estate… No we will be driving alone or only in two so we can split gas. But not more than 2 people in each car. We all are going to buy E36s.

The 318is would be quite good. Good MPG (highway and city), and a reliable engine.
As Mateusz wrote the 320i with the good old M50 is also a good decision, because it’s a really bulletproof thing and its highway MPG is also good, but it will get bad in the city where it can even drink up to 14 liters per 100 km!

planned nearly the same route (but nuremberg as starting point) but if in the alps consider Furkapass, San Bernadino Pass, Nufenen or all the others not only stelvio

We will, our plan is to go to the austria, visit the lakes and drive around the alps. Then drive to the Grossglockner -> Passo Pordoi -> Stelvio Pass -> San Bernardino -> Lake Como -> Col de Turini -> and around toscany to Venezia -> and Slovenia Mountains.

So there are no emission restrictions on Stelvio Pass? Yes, we will leave it stock. Maybe some simple mods like coilovers, wheels, air filter etc. No decats, or any chip tunings.
