Installing HID lights for old cars, yes or no?

Hi guys, i was just wondering. Is it fine to install HID lights for an old car? I have a 1980 Peugeot 504 GL, and i’m planning to convert the original square headlamps to the US style headlamps (is it called quad lamps?)

But some people told me that the US style headlamps are not very good bcs the glass is not convex enough so its not very bright for the road.

So i’m planning to install HID lights for the US style headlamps, but some say HID was not meant for old cars. “It’s not the right style”.

Can u guys help me make a decision?

Thank you very much CTzens!

HID lamps require an amplifier for the current and requires a great deal of energy. They also need proper cooling since they produce A TON of heat. If I were you, I’d go with LED due to lower power consumption (even lower than standard halogen) and produce little to no heat while being a “geniune” upgrade over the standard halogen. Good luck. Also,, don’t forget to aim your headlights properly.

No, becausw the angle of the headlight is different. You’ll be blinding everybody. Better solution is to install another pair of beams, if that’s necessary

It’s only good for cars with lenses in the headlamps. I you only have mirror-based lapm construction then the will everywhere, blinding people all in front of you

Unless you fit the auto leveling system with it aswell im prettu sure there illegal in the uk aswell as they just blind oncoming drivers pluss all the other things people said the pros dont out weigh the cons pluss the bulbs are expensive and blow alot if its a cheap system

Ok, I don’t understand much the US style headlamp thing for the 504 (would need to see an example to tell you). But what I can tell you is that you not may need HIDs, I’ve got for my Clio Osrams Cool Blue Intense 4200k, which claims on the box to have Xenon look, the bulbs themselves have a blue covering, which is slightly noticeable in the housing reflector. I also may install LED side lights (changing the bulbs in the Clio is messy, I can’t reach the side lights myself).

Besides, I love how the idea of taking an old vehicle and giving it a modern look with led bulbs and bright white or xenon style of bulbs. HIDs take a lot of power and you need to do some conversion for that, I have also seen some of the LED low beams that have this bulky fan behind them and are far brighter in close up but they appear to not reach or that further away.

Seeing the 504 on your profile I would love the idea of using the standard lens (or a clear lens, if that exists for the model) and use something like the cool blue lineup of Osrams with some LED side lights (if that’s what’s in the white part of the indicator housing), you could also invest in LED taillight bulb, all indicators and interior illumination
