HELP!! Knocking noises in VW Transporter T4 TDI

So, I was driving to work this morning in my (father’s) VW Transporter (TDI, T4, 2000 model).
The ride was smooth as always until I had about a kilometer left to work. Then suddenly I heard (and kinda felt) some weird knocking noises. At first I thought it might be from the radio, but I turned it off to be sure. And sure, there it was again. A weird knocking noise. It’s coming from somewhere just under the seats and dashboard.

Any idea what it might be, and how to find out for sure? Preferably without going to a workshop, as money is a bit tight at the moment.

Does it sound like a knock off the suspension or from the engine and is the knock reproducible when you drive a certain way?

The knocking is worst when I turn the steeringwheel towards left while driving. The suspension has gotten a beating, but is most likely not the cause of the knocking, because it does not give away any sound when we were rocking the car back and forth.

I spoke to a mechanic who gave it a testdrive, and the conclusion it that it could be several things, but nothing that I have to fix right here and now, though fixing it would make a more comfortable ride.

The most likely cause is probably front left wheel bearings, or something wrong with a shaft.

So the question is really if it is worth spending time and money on a 16 year old van with some rust.

If it’s coming from under your dashboard, it might be worth your while to just take it off
and see if there’s anything loose.
I had a problem once with a knocking sound coming from under my dashboard, I took it
off and there was a just a bolt lying there. Probably forgotten by the mechanic when
he worked on it.

Turns out it was just loose bolts. However, it was the wheel bolts coming loose. However, that wasn’t the most obvious option as the wheel bolts were tightened a couple of days before the noise appeared. Yes, I know they were tightened and not loosened, as I was the one doing it. Anyway, the noise seems to be gone after tightening the wheel bolts.
Anyway, thank you all for responding :)
