Onestamente - Is the Alfa Romeo Giulia a flop ?

None of us have escaped the big news about the Milanese carmaker’s recent and most significant creation in years. Least one can say is that the Giulia came out with a big bang : immediately crowned as the most passionating car in its segment, it seemed to perfectly ally reasonable weight, good propulsion and precise steering in a fiery, Italian-designed package.

However, the consumers seem to be significantly less enthused ; as of now, after a little more than a year post-launch, the Giulia has sold slightly under 19.000 units on the European market. Depressing results, to say the least, for the brand with the biscione , which was aiming for sale figures in the 75.000 - 100.000 bracket.

Is it Alfa Romeo’s still fragile image, still struggling to recover and distance itself from years of commercial bum-out ? Or is the supremacy of the German triumvirat really that unwavering ? From a practical standpoint, it’s possibly the lack of a break model that penalizes the Giulia, while its competitors are all endowed with one. In the meantime, the Giulia clocks in at the 4th place in terms of sales with 12%, while the Audi A4 achieves 18%, the 3 Series 22%, and the C-Class a sovereign 31%.

Of course, it is still early to globally evaluate the Giulia’s sale performances. But it goes to show that maybe the old Germanic princes are harder to topple than the hype had many believe…
