McLaren Teases Its 'Fifth Longtail' - No Prizes For Guessing What It is
Next week, McLaren Automotive will be showing off a new car to the world. It’ll be a new LongTail (LT) model - the “Fifth car to carry the legendary name,” Woking says.
Even if you were to read that without seeing the accompanying image, you wouldn’t have much trouble working out what the supercar manufacturer is talking about. The new car is, of course, the 600LT Spider.
It’ll be revealed on 16 January, only six-and-a-bit months on from the debut of the coupe version. We can expect the car to be mechanically identical to the tin top, meaning it’ll be powered by a 592bhp 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8, and be fitted with various 720S parts including its bigger brother’s double wishbones and brakes.
Given that the 600LT - like all McLaren’s cars - is built around a carbonfibre tub (‘MonoCell II’, specifically), the Spider won’t have lost any rigidity and will be able to do without bulky under-chassis bracing. The weight gain between the two models should be down to the folding roof mechanism alone, which in the 570S Spider accounts for an increase of 46kg compared to its coupe sibling.
As is the case for the 600LT coupe, McLaren won’t manufacture a specific number of Spiders, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be easy to get one - it’ll only be built for 12 months and naturally limited by factory capacity.
