You’ve seen the critically-acclaimed films Rush and Senna. Now it’s the turn of Bruce McLaren, whose astonishing efforts in building the foundations of a Formula One racing empire have been turned into cinema.

This two-minute teaser ahead of McLaren‘s debut later this year shows some of the interviews, anecdotes and real archive footage that make up the new biopic. Its official synopsis reads:

“Born in New Zealand in 1937, Bruce McLaren’s determination to make it to the summit of global motor racing circles saw his name become synonymous with the sport; displaying an incomparable will to succeed and desire to better both himself and his burgeoning super brand.

“Revealing the challenges and adversities faced along the way, including a childhood illness which threatened to alter the path of his life, McLaren is the story of one man’s unfaltering commitment to his vision which will inspire generations of sporting fans.”

It’s directed by New Zealand native Roger Donaldson, who took the helm for Thirteen Days and The World’s Fastest Indian. Bruce McLaren was also a Kiwi, hence the connection and the inspiration.

It’s not yet known how long the film will be, but it must be fairly lengthy to accommodate input from the likes of Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, Sir Jackie Stewart and many more of the people who worked with Bruce himself before his untimely death while racing at Goodwood in June 1970.

Looking forward to it? If nothing else, we hope this coincides with a return to form on the track for McLaren F1.

Finally an end to the denial of McLaren’s achievements by the very company he set up. Ron Dennis is a brilliant man, but also an incredible egomaniac.

He staunchly refused to acknowlegde Bruce, because he wanted to put the focus on now instead of the past. Thankfully that mistake has been corrected.
