Offtop question: In my BMW, when I’m starting off, the shifter is shaking a lot. Why?

Either you’re releasing too fast the clutch or engine and/or transmission mounts may be worn, allowing the powertrain to vibrate.

Same here but that should be normal imo. Never seen it differently in BMWs

Just one question, when you downshift, the revs tend to get higher. Can you brake the engine by doing, like, 120KM/H on 5th (around 3.5 k RPM), then to 2nd?

Sure! If you want to fry your clutch.

won’t fry your clutch if you rev match… there’s little to no clutch slip if you rev match correctly. You really don’t want to do it because going down so many gears like that risks over revving the engine.
If your aim of engine braking it to slow down quicker into a corner then don’t do it it’s not worth it, racing instructors will tell you it won’t make you any faster than just getting your braking point right. if the aim is to reduce brake wear in street driving you still shouldn’t do it in that way, you’re better of anticipating when to slow down earlier and just engine brake one gear at a time not 3.

No, but you will definitely brake your transmission. Ever heard of the term “I just blew a tranny”?

I’ve never skip gears when I shift to upper gears, only done when I tried to downshift though, and yes rev matching would really help if you do this. But seriously, its bugging me that people skip gears while upshifting, like why on earth, would you do that?

Got 6 gears. Don’t need ‘em all. EVERY trucker skips gears.

I do it quite often.
0-90km/h as fast as possible using gear 1 & 2 and then once you hit 90 you go to 5th to drive normally

I usually accelerate upto 60 km/h in the city, and I just skip 4th gear and go into 5th to cruise… Sure, I could go one by one, but sometimes I just don’t.

In a 30 km/h zone, you accelerate in first, then into second and then you are at 30ish km/h. After that, you can just skip third and stay at 30 km/h in fourth to keep the revs nice and low.

Funny!
I always thought reving while shifting gears is newbie thing…
I mean it often happened to me when I was learning how to drive
Sometimes I just happened to push clutch before I took my leg off accelerator

Rev on downshifts, never on upshifts. And after you push the clutch, not because of the clutch.

Shift properly or your car’s chi will be out of balance.

I watched this video and tried shifting from 5th to 2nd on the freeway…and my engine made a horrible noise and won’t start anymore. Did I do something wrong?$?$

Yeah, you used a too short gear for your speed, if you lowrered the Rpm enough you could have done it

From pair gears
2-4-/6
And non pair gears
3-5-6

This can only be used to downshift, not upshift

That horrible noise was your engine over revving and probably blew either the transmission or the engine itself. Don’t shift into the lower gear when you’re travelling on high velocity.

Was hoping someone would catch the little hint in there. What that’s known as is a “money shift”….and I hope you can guess why, because you’ll need a lot of it after it happens!

My driving instructor told me that as long you go in order 2-4-6 or 3-5 while rev matching you should be fine, but the tranny may suffer more wear

You can skip gears, the engine nor transmission does not care as long as you rev match.
