Twin cam means Engine has 2 operative cams and single cam means that the engine has only one operative cam. One operative cam means that the engine is having a traditional camshaft and twin cam means that the engine has variable valve lift system like vtec.

The second half of your comment is not true, you can have vvl with one cam and no vvl or vvt with two cams, think 2uz-fe pre 2005

That’s bullshit. In modern cars yes, most twin cam engines have some kind of VVT, but that’s not inheritly the case. You can build twin cam engines without VVT and you can build single cam engines with VVT, that’s all perfectly possible.

Single overhead cam means there is one cam shaft that is placed above the cylinders located in the head. A DOHC has 2 cams above the cylinders located in the head. Then you have overhead valve engines that have a single cam located in the block and used push rods to actuate the valves.

DOHC had two cams. One for intake, one for exhaust. SOHC has one cam that does both intake and exhaust.
