LED Headlights For '330bhp' Toyota Supra Revealed

The new Supra's light clusters have been revealed, amid speculation that the top model will 'only' have 330bhp

As the debut of the all-new Toyota Supra draws nearer, the test mules that are out in the wild are shedding their disguises and giving us a better idea of how the car will look. The latest development? That concerns headlights, as a prototype has been spotted wearing production clusters for the first time.

As we can see from some detailed snaps over at SupraMkV.com, they look to be snazzy LED units, and echo the design of the FT-1 concept’s front headlights (below).

LED Headlights For '330bhp' Toyota Supra Revealed

However, that’s not the only interesting nugget of news found over on the MkV Supra portal - thanks to a leaked BMW model codes document, we now know how powerful it’ll be. Both the new BMW Z4 (code G29) and the new Supra (code J29) are listed on the document, with the Supra getting two choices of engine: ‘30i’ and ‘40i’. In BMW engine speak, that’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four, and a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six. The current iterations of each produce 248bhp and 330bhp respectively.

So, if the engines are no more powerful than the current versions, that means the most powerful Supra will ‘only’ make 330bhp. In these power obsessed times that may not seem like much, but we reckon it might be just about on the money.

What’s perhaps more interesting is there’s no mention of the rumoured all-wheel drive hybrid model, although - assuming the document is legitimate - one could come along later in the Supra’s life.

The other intriguing takeaway is that while the information seems to confirm that the Supra will indeed only be available as an automatic, the BMW - weirdly - gets a manual option.

Time will tell if all this is correct, but for now, we want to know: do you think 330bhp is enough for the new Supra?

Maybe Toyota assume tuners will turn up the wick on the engine anyway so base BHP isn’t too important

if they assume that, then why is the supra onlu auto? you could get a box manaul from the bmw, but why not just go for the bmw in the first place

No fighting dude, but let’s agree that the upcoming MKV is an innovative auto.. It has nothing to do with the MKIV.. There’s a biiiiiiig hole between the two.

I wish all of you “JDM guys” actually knew something about JDM. Supra was ahead of it’s time. Engine wise and gearbox wise. Amd it was underpowered. Same with new one. It has a hybrid engine, so that’s a check, it has an auto, that’s check. And it’s underpowered, check.

But why an automatic gearbox? Feels more like a step backward from the mk4 6-speed. Sportscars should be manual, for the feeling. And dont mention ferraris and lambos, becouse thoose are hypercars :)

When came the 30i from i6 na engine to an i4 turbo? I thought that the last two digits were the engine size. A 30i should have 3.0 litre not 2.0. Hands up if you hate downsizes.

Maybe it’s the size the engine would be if it were N/A? I have no idea either

I’d rather assume the Supra will get the 3.5 twin turbo V6 from the 2018 Lexus LS.

So it is exactly like the last car. Underpowered and overpriced. You can’t run from the truth.

Off topic question: whats that wrap they always put on these proto cars?

It’s Dazzle Camo wrap. It was designed for warships so you can’t distinguish the speed or heading of it but it’s been used to blur the shapes of cars for years when they’re testing prototypes.
