Is Running An Old Porsche Boxster A Ruinously Expensive Experience?

The original '986' Boxsters are now temptingly cheap, but how much do they cost to run? Judging by this YouTuber's ownership costs, perhaps not as much as you might think...

While the eventual figure from this YouTuber comes to almost £3000 over about 20 months, once he takes away the non-essential items it’s a fraction of that cost.

That’s good news if you’re finding early Boxsters tempting. And tempting they certainly are: high mileage 2.5-litre examples are changing hands for under £4000, with tidier, lower mileage cars going for not much more.

There are of course unexpected bills to think about like the much discussed Intermediate Shaft Bearing (IMS) failure that also affects early 996 911s, but it’s nice to know that some home spannering - and perhaps a little good fortune - can make Boxster ownership relatively affordable.

Keeping a fleet of 80s Alfas might be more cost-effective than Colin.

A LOT of good fortune, maybe. I’m very tempted, but I know I never will until I can afford a 987.

The early 2.5l 986s are alot less susceptible to the IMS failure since they have a dual row bearing instead of the single row. Also I’ve had mine for over a year now and all I’ve had to replace was a wheel bearing and a MAF sensor. If you take care of the proper steps its not an unreliable car. Ive taken it a plenty of 7+ hour road trips and have done a few track days.

Matt Robinson - STOP TALKING ABOUT BOXTERS…

I’m after one and the price is going to start rising if people keep pointing out how good they are.
