Honda's Super-Cool Future EVs Could Take Just 15 Minutes To Charge

Electric vehicles face many challenges if they’re replace good old-fashioned internal combustion-engined cars, and the time taken to charge is one of the biggest. About half an hour for an 80 per cent charge is usually about as fast as it gets, but Honda will cutting that time down significantly by 2022.

Nikkei Asian Review reports that Honda will develop a new kind of high-capacity battery that can cope with ultra-fast charging. 15 minutes will be all it takes for a full charge, allowing for a range of around 150 miles.

The caveat is the batteries will require a much more serious fast charger to juice them up. A 350kW system would be needed, where most existing chargers - Tesla’s superchargers included - tend to manage more like 150kW. Thankfully, such a thing is on the way - a join venture between Audi, BMW, Ford and others will result in a network beefier chargers being rolled out across Europe by 2020.

Honda’s range of super-cool EVs will arrive before the battery tech does, with a production version of the Urban EV (pictured above) set to appear in 2019. The fancier cells will no doubt be making their way into the cars quickly.

In the meantime, we’re just hoping that Honda will put the Sports EV into production, which at this stage is looking unlikely…

Would be a great run around for mundane tasks like shopping. I heard Jaguar are in that group investing in chargers. Heard that Jaguar Ford and BMW would open a battery factory together …makes sense really, less cost.
