Honda Has Built An AWD EV Sports Car Prototype, And It'll Probably Make Production

Honda has built a prototype electric sports car, and has told Auto Express that it’s currently evaluating the prospect of bringing it to production. The road-going prototype is based on a CR-Z, featuring four electric motors - one at each wheel - and a 16kwh lithium-ion battery.

The car is currently running at 250bhp, but the target is 350bhp with a range of around 250 miles. Honda is currently claiming a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. That’s an incredibly quick sprint for a car with a relatively modest power output, however this can be attributed to the fact that 100 per cent of the torque in an electric motor is available the second you accelerate. Honda is remaining tight-lipped about the torque figure, but you can be sure it’ll be impressive.

The other reason it’s so quick off the line is the fact it’s all-wheel drive; torque can be distributed left to right and front to rear to maximise grip, however it’s not possible to send 100 per cent of the power to one end at any one time. Another intriguing feature of the prototype is Honda’s Precision All-Wheel Steer system, which can angle the rear wheels by up to three degrees to aid agility and stability.
