Here's An LMP1 Car Back-Flipping Just After Eau Rouge

Terrifying grandstand-shot footage shows the moment an SMP Racing LMP1 machine went airborne at last weekend's 6 Hours of Spa

The Eau Rouge/Raidillon complex at Spa-Francorchamps (Eau Rouge is the kink at the bottom, Raidillon is the steep uphill bit) is one of motorsport’s scariest corner pairings. If something goes wrong here, it’s probably going to be a big one, and it’s definitely not somewhere you’d want to have a Mercedes CLR-style back-flip.

That’s what happened to Matevos Isaakyan at last weekend’s 6 Hours of Spa though - after straying into the runoff area, the front-end of his SMP Racing BR1 lifted, triggering a terrifying airborne moment. TV cameras hmissed the incident, but this scary fan-shot footage has since emerged on YouTube.

Fortunately, Isaakyan escaped injury. The race was won by Fernando Alonso meanwhile, on his World Endurance Championship debut.

Reminds me of the crash with the GTR in 2012 at Flugplatz, Nürburgring where one spectator was killed

The first, like, 4 videos of his channel (any category) was fine, and then it immediately got REALLY annoying.

I thought it was the CLR that flipped at Le Mans when Webber was driving.

It was the CLR that went flying (twice). The CLK’s predecessor

I don’t think many jokes should be made about this. If this happened 40 years ago someone could’ve died. We should instead be thankful that safety is as good as it is.

How does this happen ? Obviously it’s due to aerodynamics but can anyone explain it to me ?

I think it happened because the front end jumped over the curbs like a ramp. the moment the front end is in the air with the rear still on the ground, the whole car’s floor basically turns into a planes wing and generates lift: the air can flow under the car at the front and is held back at the rear resulting in high air pressure underneath the car
