You Can Now Legally Import an MG RV8 (Full Article)

For all my Americans in the audience, this is an MG RV8. Introduced in 1993 and produced until 1995, the RV8 was essentially an MGB with some modern body panels and a V8 under the hood. They were built on MG MGB heritage bodies and the V8 tasked with powering the RV8 was a 3.9 liter unit with EFI capable of producing 185 bhp and do 0-60 mph in around 6.0 seconds. Power goes to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

They only built 1,983 RV8s, and surprisingly, most of them were sold in Japan, although many have since returned. The styling is divisive to some but I personally quite like how it looks, especially considering it’s based off of the rubber bumper iteration of the B. They’ve held their value quite well and I see them going for around £20,000-£30,000 on the used market (that’s approximately $28,000-$43,000 for us yanks). As I said, you can now import one of these from the first year of production (1993) to the U.S. under our 25 year import law as it’s now 25 years old. It’s pretty cool and unique and it represents a last hurrah for mainstream British sports cars, but is it really worth the premium?

185bhp is a little disappointing, even for the era… do these make any more power with tuning or aftermarket parts?

I know someone built a widebody RV8, but I don’t know if it has any more power. The engine is just the Rover 3.9 V8 you find in old Range Rovers (and some Morgan Plus 8s) and idk what sort of aftermarket that has, but there was a revised 4.0L version that powered a bunch of TVRs in the early 2000s.
