As far as historic Ford Mustangs go, it doesn’t get much better than this. What you’re looking at is Mustang number 00002, and the first hardtop to be serialised with a VIN number. Does that mean it’s the second Mustang ever built, and the first hardtop? Well, no, actually.

Ford didn’t build cars consecutively by VIN number - and apparently doesn’t now either. It’s been deemed impossible to determine exactly when it rolled off the production line, although it’s fair to say this particular pony is one of the first of nine million Mustangs built over the car’s 50+ year history.

There’s a bit of quirkiness to spice up its already interesting back-story, too. It was originally destined for Vancouver, but some sort of bizarre logistical error meant it ended up in western Canada’s Yukon Territory. It served as a dealership demonstrator at Whitehorse Motors until finally being sold on in 1965.

It’s a modestly-specced car, powered by a 170 cubic-inch (2.8-litre) straight-six mated to a three-speed manual gearbox. Oh, and see those dinky wheels? They measure at just 13 inches in diameter. It’s finished in Caspian Blue, complimented by an oh-so 60s blue vinyl interior.

No auction estimate has been given, but given what a rare opportunity this is (Mustang VIN number 00001 is holed up in the The Henry Ford Museum), you can bet it’ll go for a hefty figure. It’ll go under the hammer at Mecum’s Indianpolis event some time between 16 and 21 May.

So all in all it’s just a Mustang which has a 00002 engraved somewhere in the chassis? And it isn’t even the 2nd one ever built? Sure, I’d pay half a million for that!
