Ford Has Recalled 1.3 Million Cars Over Steering Wheels That Could Fall Off

The key thing we like to see in a steering wheel is a good, solid attachment to the rest of the car, but that's something 1.3 million Fords and Lincolns might not have...
Ford Has Recalled 1.3 Million Cars Over Steering Wheels That Could Fall Off

Of all car problems, rated on a scale of one to certain death, your steering wheel coming off in the middle of a corner is up there pretty high. With that in mind, if you’re biffing around in America behind the wheel of a 2014-2018 Ford Fusion or similar vintage Lincoln MKZ, you might want to grip that wheel extra tightly.

Following two reported accidents and an injury, more than 1.3 million Fusions and MKZs have been recalled because the wheel could simply come off. The problem has been traced to a bolt that holds the wheel on; it’s not long or strong enough and can work loose over time. The fix? A bigger bolt.

The fix is free, of course, and owners will be contacted ASAP to arrange the remedial work. Alternatively, and we suspect many owners will take this route, you could telephone your local dealer and yell at them until they promise to throw a free keyring/valet/service into the deal as well.

If you’re not sure whether your car is affected, it’s definitely worth contacting your dealer to have it checked out. They’ll be able to tell by the chassis number.

I like this. Add a rollcage and you’ve got a proper racecar
