Ford has revealed a special-edition Mustang for the European market, in celebration of the car’s 55th anniversary earlier this year.
Called the Mustang55, it’s essentially a styling exercise on the existing car. It spans the fastback and the convertible with either manual or automatic transmissions, but only the 5.0-litre V8 engine option. The 2.3-litre EcoBoost gets its own tweaks, which we’ll tell you about later.
The most obvious addition to the Mustang55 is the set of dissolve-effect racing stripes. A pair emerge from the bonnet vents towards the windscreen, while others run along the lower quarter of the sides between the two axles, fading towards the rear.
Fastback models get a black-painted roof, convertibles get a black cloth hood, while they both get 19-inch black alloy wheels. The stripes are always in black unless you specify Shadow Black paint, in which case they’re silver. Really, the colours you want are new additions: Twister Orange, Grabber Lime and Lucid Red. Iconic Silver is also available and should look very classic with the black stripes in situ.
Gloss Black and Pillar Black detailing is everywhere you look, accented by a Colorado Red decimal point in the 5.0 badge on the front wing. Finally, there’s an optional Pillar Black boot lip spoiler.
Inside it’s all about luxury. You get heated and cooled front seats, SYNC 3 connectivity, a 12-speaker B&O stereo system and limited connected functions like remote-start (automatics only), remote door unlock and a vehicle locator. Thieves be warned.
As for the 2.3-litre car, it gets its own visual upgrades courtesy of a suite of changes inspired by past Shelby GT350 and GT500 models. Its door mirrors and boot spoiler now come in Magnetic Grey, but you’ll most likely first see the black dissolve-effect bonnet stripes that hug the bulge.
The grille is finished in Magnetic Grey and includes the classic tri-bar pony badge that was introduced in 1965. Interestingly, Good Neighbour Mode has been standardised on the 2.3, limiting the car’s exhaust noise output at pre-programmed times, according to what drive mode you’re in and how you’re driving.
