1993 Mazda Autozam AZ-1

A collaboration between Mazda and Suzuki, the Autozam AZ-1 is widely regarded as the king of the Kei Cars.
In stock form, it is a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, micro sports car with gullwing doors.
This car features dyno-matched dampers and lowering springs to aid with handling.
This car also features a Mazdaspeed exhaust, Zero 1000 aftermarket air intake, and GReddy Profec B - Spec II electronic boost controller.
Stock power is rated at 64 bhp, and while I have not yet put the car on a dyno my guess is that current power with boost controller is in the vicinity of 100 whp.
The AZ-1 has a Suzuki F6A DOHC 3 cylinder engine with IHI RH31 turbocharger.
The stock steering wheel is so large in such a tiny car, I had to add a smaller steering wheel which i have pulled from one of my formula cars. I fabricated and welded a custom quick release adapter for my 3-bolt race wheel and attached it to the factory steering column.

See below for an episode of Jay Leno’s Garage featuring my wonderful friend Ashley and her AZ-1 for further information.

That’s an awesome little car, and it’s becoming a lot more popular nowadays! I love it!

I’ve wanted one for a really long time, and I saved up extra cash from every paycheck for a couple years. It finally made its way into my posession a couple months ago. Autozams have such a great little owners community, very tight-knit and friendly.

The engine bay looks way too big for that tiny motor, almost as if it was designed for a v or a flat engine

It’s because of the exhaust. The base model exhaust routes up to a muffler behind the engine and back down to a single exit. It’s very similar to a 3rd gen MR2.
The Mazdaspeed exhaust routes to a dual exit canister beneath the rear bumper.
Fun fact: the base model has a steel heat shield that says “AUTOZAM” right where the Mazdaspeed muffler goes, so the Mazdaspeed exhaust won’t fit.

Awesome! :) I ended up getting myself a Honda Street XI kei van just a few days ago (being de-registered & shipped now).
