Do More Expensive Exhausts Give Bigger Power Gains?

The guys from Motor Trend's Engine Masters series put both cheap and expensive mufflers to the test, to see where the biggest bang for buck lies

If you’re planning on upping the power of your car, it’s likely that some exhaust parts are going to be on the menu. But what size should you go for if it’s for a relatively low power, mostly stock engine, and how much should you spend?

The guys behind the ever fascinating Engine Masters series pitted cheap mufflers against expensive ones to find out, while also attempting to answer the important question of whether or not size matters.

It depends what car you drive. A high performance car like a Audi TTS then yes it probably will. If you have a (un)limited edition 1.2 Corsa then IT WON’T !!!!!!

probably the opposite if you think about it, an audi TTS is designed with engine performance in mind from the start, so audi will have put lots of r&D into the exhaust and optimizing it for power ,, but the 1,2corsa is designed with efficiency quietness and cost in mind so whatever limited R&D vauxhall put in will not go to getting power but more to quietness and efficiency.
also if u gain 5bhp in a 1.2 corsa wyou mite actually notice a difference but it u gain 5bhp in a TTs you probably wont.

Putting a 4-inch pipe on a car is useless if you have a 1.5-inch manifold…

Size will affect pressure and in the end it depends on what you want some exhausts will give you more pressure at low RPM and some at high RPM

Sometimes an exhaust that is too big will actually slow down exhaust gas velocity (speed) on an NA car prove less effective. Additionally it has been proven that some silencers and mufflers can aid flow rather than just hinder. The design and bends etc will also prove a huge factor.

Larger exhaust tubing making less horsepower is nothing but a myth and so is backpressure in that context. It has been proven wrong multiple times already.

Watch some more engine masters eposodes. 3in proved more effective than 2.5 in their last test (mentioned in the video) theyve also done a rest where they bashed in headers to see if there was any decrease in hp from the damage. None
