Rumours about the updated MX-5 receiving an overhauled engine have turned out to be correct
Confirmed: The 2019 Mazda MX-5 Has 181bhp And A 7500rpm Redline

Remember those rumours that suggested the MX-5 was in line for a more powerful engine? They were based upon an NHTSA document picked up by Road and Track a few months ago, which listed the 2019 model year 2.0-litre MX-5 as having ‘181 HP’ (178bhp). Well, we’ve now had confirmation that a pokier MX-5 is definitely happening.

Japanese publication Car Watch tested a prototype version of the updated Miata, revealing that the fettled 2.0-litre engine does indeed produce 178bhp, up from 153bhp. Not only that, but the unit now revs to 7500rpm, an increase of 700rpm.

The changes to the engine are extensive. The valve spring rate has been increased, the cylinders and connecting rods are lighter and the crankshaft counterweights have been revised. There’s also a bigger throttle body opening, a larger exhaust valve and a new silencer. The icing on the cake is the new low-inertia dual mass flywheel.

Aesthetic tweaks include new exterior and interior colours, and there’ll finally be a steering wheel which adjusts for reach. Lanky Miata drivers rejoice.

What we’re not sure about is if whether or not changes will be making their way to other territories. When contacted by Road and Track, Mazda USA refused to comment. Meanwhile, Car Throttle is currently awaiting clarification from Mazda UK.

Wat Toyota / Subaru should do is put the 2.5 boxer in the brz/86 or a modified version of the 2.0 that’s like 2.2 L I just they don’t get too far into a HP war cuz as they sit they are awesome

Mazda gets it. Why aren’t there more cars like this? Simple, small, affordable, quick cars. Not everything has to be hybrid assisted, dual clutch twin turbo technological disasters. This is how you update/facelift a car.
