The new Honda Civic Type R is the latest subject to be examined in Chris Harris Drives, where it's compared to the celebrated EP3
The EP3 is considered to be the high point of the Civic Type R lineage (ignoring the FD2 most of the world didn’t get), so it’s not at all surprising to see Chris Harris use it as a benchmark when driving the new version.
The conclusion? That with the new ‘FK8’, Honda is back to its best when it comes to hot hatch building. Not only that, but Harris also questions whether cars like the Ford Focus RS really need to be four-wheel drive.
It’s an incredible car that’s stupidly capable and very fun to drive. You just need to be able to live with the looks…

I feel that the EK9 should be the legendary one - it is the daddy of the CTRs!
The point is, we never got the EK9 in the UK (to be fair, other than the Japanese, no-one did).

Ep3 all day. The new type R is a pre-teen fanboy design with a garbage engine choice. Not everything should be turbocharged. More power doesn’t equal more fun.
The K20C1 is perfectly fine. Turbocharging is your own opinion. Fun is in the eyes of the beholder.
If the current Type R has a garbage engine, I guess that means the only type R’s with a good engine were the EK9, DC2, CL1, NA1 and NA2?
Totally agree, an all motor K20A n/a would’ve been better, even with 50hp less
