Japan-based auction house, BH Auction, have recently announced the line-up for their upcoming ‘Team Taisan’ sale. If Google Translate serves me right, the auction - taking place at Suzuka Circuit on the 17th November - will offer a number of race cars and parts from the collection of Team Taisan. There’s a Gr.A R32 Skyline, a Nismo GT-R GT3, a 1924 3.0 Bentley and, of course, this incredible F40 built to compete in the JGTC championship in the early 1990s.

Unlike the majority of other F40s racing at the time, this example left the factory in 1988 as a ‘regular’ road-going example destined for a collection in Japan. After a few years of usage the car fell into the hands of the Taisan racing team who built the car up to race-spec in time for the 1994 season. While the LM-inspired wing and front radiator ducts were fitted early in its racing career, the completely redesigned front clam and headlights were believed to have been fitted in the late 1990s during the car’s ventures in to small local races.

Though the F40 hasn’t seen a great amount of usage since its racing heyday. its current condition isn’t going to win it any concours (unless coolness is a factor). Taking this into account, as well as the fact most of its bodywork was built in a small Japanese garage rather than at the factory itself, it’s estimated that this F40 will sell between £425,000 - £503,000: around half what a ‘regular’ 1988 example would require. This really is one of those cars I’d buy in a heartbeat given the funds…
