BMW Has Revealed The Crazy Pace Of The 616bhp M5 Competition

These are the first official pictures of the BMW M5 Competition, following one of 2018’s ridiculous amount of new car leaks last week.

The numbers that emerged have been confirmed as correct, so you get an official 616bhp that, via the car’s switchable four-wheel drive system, can catapult the car to 62mph in 3.3 seconds and on to 124mph in an equally bonkers (for a practical saloon) 10.8 seconds.

Peak torque for the E63 S rival is reportedly maintained for an extra 200rpm to help produce the extra performance. The 553lb ft ceiling now extends right from 1800rpm to 5800rpm.

Under the belly you’ll still find the standard M5’s eight-speed automatic transmission and Active M Differential, but the Competition adds BMW’s M Sport exhaust with adjustable volume. We wonder whether it goes up to 11…

The damped engine mounts have been switched for firmer ones to help speed-up engine responses, not that we thought it particularly needed it when we drove the standard car. Added to those is a new suspension setup with firmer springs and a 7mm lower ride height.

Unlike the M2 Competition, which replaced the ordinary M2, the hotter M5 will be sold alongside its plainer brother. BMW already has a similar arrangement with the M3 and M4 Competition cars. Deliveries for the new M5 Competition are expected to start in September, with prices yet to be confirmed but likely to tickle their way into six figures. The standard car starts at £89,645.

The M5 is bonkers the way it is, but who’s gonna say no to more bang in a car like this?

Not me 😅

The better question is, who’s gonna pay the price of brand new Fiesta ST for 25bhp

Every time I see a car like this I’m first excited because it’s cool and new and fast and so on, but also I don’t get what’s the point…

Firstly, it’s just overly powerful for public roads, there’s no way you can enjoy this power on any public road (with an exception of German autobahns maybe). Yet you’re not gonna take it for a track day really - still not as fun as a Lotus or Caterham really, a bit too heavy and too expensive too.

Secondly, it’s not that it has a screaming V10 anymore - previously you would buy an M5 to have fun and enjoy the sound, rather than going fast. Although the 4.4 V8 sounds good, it’s still not the car you would buy to enjoy the noise…

I would totally get a 530e hybrid and a Lotus/Porsche/F-type/etc instead

I know that people who can afford to pay £100k for a 5-series probably also have a bunch of sportscars too, but this just further demonstrates that this car is the definition of “excessive”

You can enjoy that power on public roads, but you would have to redline every shift and sacrifice reliability, longetivity, fuel economy, and risk being ticketed for excessive amount of noise

in the US, BMW buyers buy the most they afford, JUST for bragging right.
It’s all about the badge and “pull” on the highway.
Shame but that’s all.

I am really happy to see another person other than me who appreciates the 530e/530e xDrive. If you have a garage that has charging capability, this car is a gem. It costs the same as the 530i and has same level of performance, but you have the potential to save big by frequently charge it. It also is build and handles like any other BMW. I think 530e is the most underrated 5 series out there.

How much time before we accept to call super saloon supercars? Like petrolhead ones that you notice thanks to details and not flashy colours
