Behold The Widebody Majesty Of This Porsche 928 Koenig

Behold The Widebody Majesty Of This Porsche 928 Koenig

As much as we love widebody-converted cars, most are rather lacking in class, aren’t they? If you want a more tasteful way to go wide, you need a Koenig.

Munich-based tuner Koenig Specials GmbH was a big name in the 1980s and 1990s, doing something few were back then: modifying already very exciting supercars. Granted, some of the company’s projects raised eyebrows back then, but surely we can all agree that today, this Koenig-modified 928 is a thing of beauty.

Due to be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in Essen on 11 April, it’s a part of the astonishing, 140-car ‘Youngtimer Collection’ which includes all sorts of performance car heroes of the 80s and 90s, among other treasures.

You can probably expect us to pluck a few more out for closer inspection in the coming days, but this 1988 928 might just be our favourite. We’re digging those oh-so 80s side vents, and can’t get enough of the dead-on rear view, showcasing those blistered arches and vast 345/35/15 tyres. Good luck sourcing replacements for those…

The Middle East-spec car was purchased in Bahrain by the consignor. Not so long ago it was treated to a full restoration to the tune of €14,000, during which time it was repainted and given a new windscreen.

On the inside, you’ll find grey leather upholstery, which looks pristine. And here’s the reason - the car has only covered 17,118 kilometres. You won’t find a gear lever in there, though - unfortunately, it’s fitted with an automatic transmission. But hey, you do get a car phone.

The estimate for the car is €50,000 - €60,000, which - considering the mileage, the Koenig conversion and just how ridiculous modern classic car prices have become - doesn’t seem all that bad.

Non-running ones are less than 10k, running ones in desolate condition ~10-12k. Decent ones start at ~15k, spotless low-mileage examples are ~30k and above. That’s just for a regular 928, the S, S4, GT and GTS versions are more expensive, also the manual versions go for a little more than the automatics. The most expensive one is the 928 GTS which usually seems to go for ~40k for a somewhat decent one (even the S4 Clubsport is less expensive, the GTS has the 5.4l V8 which is a very desirable engine). As with all Porsches, there is no limit on how far up you can go in price, if you have the money you can easily spend 100k or more on one

It’ll cost around the 7 digit figure and to be a garage Queen, never to be driven.

Good luck finding replacements for the tyres you say? A quick search here in Bulgaria gave me the exact same tyres - Pirelli PZERO Asimmetrico 345/35/15 at a price of “just” £740 a piece.
