Why is it called Honda Civic?

Little bit of history.
The first generation Honda Civic is an automobile which was produced by Honda in Japan from July 1972 to 1979. Honda began selling the 1169 cc (70 in³) transversely mounted inline-four engine Civic for about US$2,200.

The Civic was the first Honda car to be sold in Britain when it was launched there in 1972, at a time when the sale of Japanese cars from Honda’s competitors Nissan and Toyota were soaring. Its compact design and economical engine ensured that it sold well in Britain in the aftermath of the 1973 oil crisis.

But why is it called Civic?

Simple, Honda used the definition of Civic which is: If something is related to or benefits an individual citizen, it can be described as civic. The adjective civic comes from the Latin word civis, which was the word for a citizen of Ancient Rome. It is also a root word for “city,” so civic can also mean anything related to a city.

Basically it is a city car, not for racing folks! Although it has been used for racing and tons of mods.
Be civic, buy a Honda!

The name Civic came from CVCC which was the original name for it. It stands for Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion.

Must correct you bud! I searched the damn thing for hours today. I thought the same, it actually made sense for Civic. Nothing related to CVCC.

Wouldn’t CVCC just be the precursor to VTEC, like T-VIS was the precursor to VVT-i?

Interesting. I always thought the name spawned from CVCC and engineers thought it’d be easier to say civic than it.
