Miata/MX5 Differentials Explained

The majority of the documentation, fan built at least for MX5 / Miata differentials is very old and somewhat sporadic and difficult to find.

From our years or nerding out on MX5/Miatas we’ve put together a relatively exhaustive list of what you need for your situation and something to help take the witchcraft out of it all!

Have a read and you should come away feeling way more informed about the box of gears keeping you on the straight and narrow, or sideways if that’s your preference.

Cheers!

Very informative write up. I was lucky enough to find a type 2 torsen for £150 which is what i sold the old open diff it replaced for. It made a big difference on track. The car felt more stable at speed and slides were easier to control. Defiently worth the upgrade.

Good read! Would you happen to know what the rear end for a 2001 LS LSD is? It’s a US spec car. I think it is a Torsen Diff (not the Tochigi Fuji LSD) based on research. From what I read 01-02 still have Torsens and 03-05 have a Tochigi Fuji. I can’t seem to figure what rear end it is though.

You’re right it’ll be a Torsen 01-02, it’ll most likely be a 4.1 if its a 5 speed car, if its a 6 speed likely a 3.9.

Its very similar to the SE spec car we had for the original B cars here in the UK but that was a 4.1 with an Open diff.
