The 3rd Generation Mercury Capri Had Some Quite Unusual Taillights

Unless you’re a weirdo like me, chances are you probably don’t know much about the 1991-1994 Mercury Capri. If there is once piece of information you should know about this car, it would be that of its quirky and cool taillights.

But first some background,

The 3rd generation Mercury Capri debuted in 1991 and was produced until 1994, although the models we’re focusing on are the 1991-1993 models, more on that in a bit. The Capri was a front engined front wheel drive roadster offered with either a 1.6l naturally aspirated inline 4 making 100 horsepower or a 1.6l turbocharged inline 4 making 132 horsepower in the XR2 trim level. Power was delivered to the wheels through either a 4 speed auto box or a 5 speed manual, with the 4 speed only an option in the base model. Interestingly, the car was assembled in Victoria, Australia, so this one’s from down under.

Now back to the taillights.

Look at those things, they look like they’re made of legos! From 1991-1993 the Capri came equipped with these oddly geometric tail lamps, while in the 1994 model Mercury swapped them for a more conventional design. Many other cars from the 1980s had headlights with cross hatching but this is on a whole new level. I had a neighbor who had two of these, both in red, and every time I walked by I would notice those cool taillights. Now I’m no taillight expert so someone please tell me what each of these squares do, I need to know.

I think these taillights are really cool, but what do you guys think? Comment your thoughts below.

Had fun reading.
Educated guess:
White legos - revers lights
Orange legos - indicators
Red legos - brakes lights

Unfortunately, the thing’s a lemon. They were sold as a Ford Capri in Australia, and are really quite terrible cars.

I believe it. It never really was good enough to be a true competitor to the Miata
