4 Things That Are Tempting Me Back To Motorbikes

Despite having a motorbike license, I've not ridden for around three years after having an accident. But a few things have been tempting me back towards a life on two wheels...

1. MotoGP

Or any top-level bike racing, for that matter. Seeing what these extraordinarily talented human beings can do is a reminder of how involving riding a motorbike is. The way riders shift their weight around and damn near get off the bike during corners as they get a knee and elbow down is a beautiful thing to watch.

2. Every single Ducati I see

Before I embarked on the current motorbiking hiatus I find myself in, I gravitated towards Ducatis. I love the way they look, the way they sound, and then there’s the fact that they’re Italian. And I rather like Italian things. Before I packed in biking, I figured my next bike, or perhaps the one after that, would be a Ducati.

The issue now I’m not riding, is that I salivate at the sight of every single Ducati I see. And I wonder if I should return to the world of bikes, just so I can own one…

3. Chris Pratt

God dammit, Chris! I was never fussed about the Triumph Scrambler, and then you had to ride one in the silly but entertaining romp that is Jurassic World. And now of course, I love the idea of a Scrambler; that old-school style and the high-level exhaust - they’re insanely cool bikes. Of course, I probably wouldn’t look quite as ruggedly handsome as this chap while riding one, but I can live with that.

4. My commute

As the CT offices are pretty much slap bang in the middle of central London, driving is out of the question. It’d take me over three hours - much of which would be spent in traffic - I’d get stung by the £10 congestion charge, and parking would cost me about £20 a day if I’m lucky. With that in mind, I take the train in, but that’s not much better: delays are frequent, I can’t always get a seat, and even though it’s just a 40 or so mile journey, it’s absurdly expensive.

However, if I still had a motorbike, I could ride in. There are risks associated with riding in a big, busy city like London, but just think of the benefits. It’d cost just a third of the train, and would potentially be a little quicker. I’d be able to park my bike free of charge right outside the office, and I’d probably look pretty cool getting off my Triumph Scrambler, don’t you think?
