Drifting at a Car Show & My First Time Tandeming

So here in Utah there is a big car show called Import Spring Showoff. For 2018 we lost the original venue. This year it was postponed and moved to Utah’s racetrack: Utah Motorsports Campus.

The track was lively, not only was there a car show. NASA had a track day where spectators could ride along, UMC had kart rentals open for the public to race on the kart track. Simulators were open and what I was here for, the drift ride alongs. Sounds like an awesome car show right? But wait there is more, Lucas Oil Off Road Racing was taking place at the dirt short course. There was everything there.

I showed up early to help set up the course at the SuperTuner booth. SuperTuner is a clothing company dedicated to automotive enthusiasts. You may have seen there “Let’s Drift” video somewhere along the lines. The guys drifting was a team called Take Luck. I got the opportunity from one the members to come take people for ride alongs so I jumped at the opportunity!

Once the gates opened we started to drift. People were lining up and we were hot lapping our cars. I got the go ahead to tandem if I wanted so I let a more experienced driver follow me. I sent it too hard and spun out. After, I cut the course really quick and this turned into a follow run. Once I got into the zone it was a rush to be sliding behind another car, chasing it, trying to closer and closer. Then I remembered this is my daily so I tried not to get too aggressive. After this experience, I want to build a dedicated skid machine where I don’t have to worry about putting a ding in it here or there.

At one point this was the line for ride alongs. I had one passenger tell me he waited for an hour to ride with us. That’s dedication! I had to make the runs good.

Since the line was massive and there were maybe 8 drivers (and some tandeming each time) we would finish a run, drop off a passenger, wait a minute, get another passenger and go again. Our tires were getting roasted. I killed my first set in 30 minutes, in there defense they were cupped pretty badly on the inside. The faithful but ugly 300ZX wheels lasted about an hour and a half and my last pair of 18’s made it to the end of the event. 3 pairs of Federal 595’s have been repurposed as clouds.

At the end of the day we were running out of time and still had a few passengers waiting so patiently. We went out with a bang and those who still had tread left went for some drift trains. I was the caboose but man, this was the best to follow all of these guys. This picture describes it no better. Today was a good day. I got to drift which is fun, but I got drift with these guys who are significantly better than me and it was awesome to be taken on with them. I think the best part though was taking people for ride alongs, I asked every person I took with me if they have ever been drifting. 95% said they have never been or that they have only done it in the snow. After each run I asked if they had fun and there smile was the most redeeming thing. It was great to introduce people to drifting. We are like drift missionaries or something? (knock knock Yes do you have time to talk about our lord and savior, Keichi Tsuchiya?)

Thanks for reading this guys! Up above is the video! If you liked the article you’ll love the video so please check it out, like it, send it to your grandma, subscribe pls. Also check out SuperTuner, there IG and YouTube is SuperTunerUSA and site is SuperTunerUSA.com. All in all I personally took 50 people on drift runs and over 300 in total rode along at the event. Thanks everyone!
