Car Throttle News Bites: 31st January 2012

DartGTS

News Bites for today include Dodge's hot Dart,  Audi's new diesel, teaser shots of the upcoming 2013 Dodge Viper, some good ole' fashioned intellectual property theft, an electric crossover thing, and Super Bowl advertisements from Audi and Honda.  Read on for the News Bites! Dodge's Dart subcompact was just revealed a few weeks ago, but we've already got two pieces of future speculation on where the lineup could expand.  First, Mopar will be bringing a concept Dart to the Chicago Auto Show, called the Dart GTS 210 Tribute.  It previews the two "stages" of Mopar upgrades for the new sedan.  Stage 1 will be aesthetic goodies, like the carbon fiber hood with Viper-esque scoop, and matte black side skirts, front diffuser, and other trim - along

Car Spotting in Los Angeles, Pt I

IMG_8865-2

Sometimes I realize I have a certain lack of perspective when it comes to the car thing.  Perhaps it's a regional thing.  I'm in Los Angeles for a few days (a family member is getting married), and some of the cars that raise eyebrows in Raleigh would be taxis around here.  If there's an area in the US that embraces car culture more fully than the city of Angels, I'm not sure what it is.  This is a place where a C-class Mercedes is like a Taurus, and you routinely see more than ten Bentleys a day.  It's special.  My shutter finger has been getting tired.  Check it out. See, in the middle of the eastern seaboard, a CL55 AMG Supercharged is the kind of

Tesla Raises The Bar With Model S Beta

TeslaModelSInMotion

Pictured above is the Tesla Model S "Alpha". The Beta model, pictured below, shows further styling development. Here we are in late 2011, and that means that deliveries of the Tesla Model S are less than a year away. All is going ahead to plan, and this past weekend Tesla held preview events for journalists and buyers at its plant in Fremont, California. Some have said Tesla's promises will be highly difficult to deliver upon. One such person is Dan Neil of The Los Angeles Times, who bet Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk that he wouldn't be able to deliver the car by 2012. If Musk fails, he must give $1,000,000 to a charity. If he wins, Neil has to donate $1,000. A

Toyota and Tesla Working on $1 Billion Deal?

TeslaModelSBlackFrontAngle

Tesla wasn't "supposed" to survive this long. Starting a new independent automaker is a difficult, and near impossible task. So far, Tesla has done it though. Tesla has had the advantage of major private financial backing, $465 million in Department of Energy loans, a successful Initial Public Offering and a few partnerships with large manufacturers along the way. One of which was with Daimler for an electric smart car - that included Daimler taking a 10% stake in the company reportedly valued at $50 million. Last year Toyota and Tesla began a partnership of their own. Tesla purchased Toyota's NUMMI factory in Freemont, California, for production of the Model S sedan. As part of the deal, Toyota took a similar stake as Daimler, valued at $100

Tesla Planning Model X Crossover in 2014

TeslaModelSInMotion

Tesla has been steadily moving forward with efforts on its Model S sedan, recently detailing the car's road testing "Alpha" build. Over the past two years the company has gotten major injections of funding from private investors, Department of Energy loan guarantees and a recent Initial Public Offering. The funding has helped secure the former Toyota-General Motors joint NUMMI factory in Freemont, California, as well as the continued development of the Model S. Tesla's plan has always been to start at the top with a roadster and successively roll-out more inexpensive vehicles. The Model S sedan is the second model in this plan. However, in addition to a future in the $25,000 model range, the Model S has been said to spawn other variants. The

Trip to the Tesla Dealer: Roadster 2.5 Pictures

Last week, we were out of town and had the opportunity to stop in at Tesla Silicon Valley in Menlo Park, California. This dealer is where a lot of Tesla sales take place, in the heart of California's tech industry and Tesla's backyard. It just so happened that the updated Roadster 2.5 was recently announced and on display at the dealer. The cars on display had already been sold, and there was a customer in the dealer in the process of a purchase. The particular model we saw on display was a Roadster Sport 2.5 in Simply Orange. It looked extremely good with the carbon fiber accents, and we loved the orange color. The updates for the 2.5 versus the 2.0 are subtle, but improve the look.

Toyota and Tesla Team Up?

Small volume companies are hard to come by in the automotive industry. Globalization and consolidation due to economies of scale have snuffed out most of the smaller guys. Tesla, on the other hand, is a startup company that aims to defy that. So far, Tesla has already cooperated with Daimler, inking a deal with the company that resulted in a 10% stake. As part of that deal, Tesla provided electric powertrains for the smart lineup. Another partnership could be in the works now, announced today by California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He said that Tesla Motors will partner with Toyota to build electric cars in California. As most following the company know, Tesla has been working to find a California manufacturing facility. They were rumored to have selected a

Tesla and TAG Heuer Team Up for “Odyssey of Pioneers”

At the Geneva International Motor Show, Tesla debuted a special TAG Heuer Roadster. The car has special markings and a its "Foucault Field Gray" color, along with an interior that has a specially-designed console to fit in with a special (you guessed it) Tag Heuer watch. We know, the stuff dreams are made of. Apparently the car was coordinated around the Swiss watchmaker's 150th anniversary, and to celebrate that, the TAG Heuer Tesla Roadster is embarking on a 12,000-mile world tour called the "Odyssey of Pioneers." Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the first Roadster owners and an "official TAG Heuer Ambassador" began the tour along with Tesla's CEO Elon Musk and TAG Heuer's CEO Jean-Christophe Babin. Check out the dates for the tour below, beginning in Monaco this month and

Tesla Increasing Roadster Production, Extending Sales To 2012

In January, it was discovered in a SEC filing for an IPO that Tesla would stop selling the Roadster, due to tooling changes at the Lotus plant in Hethel, England where it is built. The Roadster's production was contracted out to Lotus, and it shares some components with the Elise. The announcement was unplanned, and would have left Tesla with no vehicles to sell until the Model S comes into production. That is a dangerous position to be in, but it looks like Tesla has worked something out. The latest update broke in Tesla's March newsletter, where Tesla says that, "responding to customer demand" agreements with suppliers have been negotiated, increasing Roadster production by 40% in order to extend sales into 2012. With those agreements in place,

BREAKING: Three Tesla Executives Die In Plane Crash in Palo Alto

In what Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk is calling "the worst day in Tesla history", three Tesla executives were killed today in a small plane crash in Palo Alto, California. The names of the three victims are unclear, but the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the plane was owned by Doug Bourn, a senior electrical engineer for Tesla Motors. As the names have not been confirmed, it is unclear if he was onboard. They were only identified as high-ranking executives of Tesla Motors, along with two other employees. UPDATE: Tesla VP of Communications Ricardo Reyes & VP Diarmuid O'Connel were not on board the flight. The plane is a twin-engined Cessna 110, manufactured in 1976 and registered to Air Unique, Incorporated in Santa Clara, California. The cause
