Retrospective: 1984-86 Ford Mustang SVO
With all the talk of Ford's new EcoBoost engine lineup, (at least on this site), one might be lead to believe that this is the first time Ford of America has dabbled with turbocharging. It's sort of how they're portraying it, anyway. This isn't the case, though. EcoBoost is Ford's solution to providing performance in a time when efficiency is also important. Downsized engines, advanced technology, and turbocharging are Ford's response now - and it was Ford's response in the early 80's as well. After weathering two fuel crises, Ford decided to try it's hand at turbocharging to offer an alternative to the venerable 302 to those who wanted something more efficient or a bit different - or by the time the Mustang SVO debuted
