Saab Purchase Could Help Quant Make It To Production?

In February, Koenigsegg released a teaser of a new supercar. The Quant as it was called, later debuted at the Geneva International Auto Show in March. The Quant marked a new direction for Koenigsegg in many ways. It's styling was certainly a departure, as well as it's Grand Tourer nature. Perhaps the most important difference though was it's powertrain. Koenigsegg claimed a 312-mile range and 20 minute recharge time from a commercial grade power source. If true, they are amazing figures to be sure! I wondered how it was possible for Koenigsegg to bring the car to production. Now, a whirlwind few months later, could Saab help that car become a reality? That's what Swedish news site Realtid is saying. Now the translation is extremely sketchy but the takeaway is that Koenigsegg is

It’s Official: Koenigsegg Buying Saab

Well that was fast! Just yesterday it was reported that General Motors was planning to announce the sale of Saab to Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg within the week. Guess things worked out faster then they planned, because they dropped the announcement today. Those reports about Koenigsegg, the letter of intent and all were right. The fact that Koenigsegg was a Swedish company was what helped them win out in the end. The new owner holds a firm belief in having Saab remain a Swedish manufacturer to it's core. I suspect this will make the Swedish government more apt to provide the brand with financing in the future, where as they might not have been as keen to do so with a foreign owner. Like Saturn, GM will continue to provide powertrains and platforms to Saab for at least 5-6 years. That ensures they have a continued stake in seeing Saab succeed. I expect

Saab To Announce Buyer This Week; Volvo Will Own a Fraction?

Rumors, speculation, "inside reports" of who exactly is buying Saab will (hopefully) be put to rest once and for all with Saab's official announcement of a new buyer this week. Fiat, Magna, various investment groups, an "unnamed German bank", China's Geely have all been in the running to purchase the brand and now one will be selected. Spokeswoman Gunilla Gustavs was quoted as saying "I think that during this week, chances are good. It could be anytime now." With announcements and negotiations for GM's brands being announced and completed, it seems like at least some of the tumult is dissapearing and that will be good for everyone. I think we've had enough, ahem - "excitement" in the industry for a while. Koenigsegg has emerged as the front-runner and likely buyer

Koenigsegg Signs Letter of Intent for Saab

With Saab ready to launch new models like the 9-4X and 9-5 Sedan, now seems like a perfect time for a committed new owner to take over and truly develop the brand to it's full potential. In addition, Saab has gotten bankruptcy funding from the Swedish government to the tune of $3.23 billion, in order to see the new models through to launch. With the company posting a loss of $340 million in 2008, that should keep them afloat for a while. The numbers actually aren't that bad (better then I expected) and I think with good product a new owner could turn things around relatively quickly. So Saturn's going to The Penske Group, Opel to Manga International, Hummer to a Chinese heavy-equipment manufacturer and now Saab to Koenigsegg. Swedish Television

Volvo P1800 Remake Renderings

There's been quite a few projects lately by companies big and small that aim to remake or reimagine classic vehicles. Retro just never does go away, does it?  I think it's really cool to see and a new car design has come out today based on the old Volvo P1800 and it is extremely cool. Now that's a Volvo in true GT style! This new remake is based on the classic Volvo P1800 sports car and in my opinion, definitely improves on the design of that car. This one is extremely good looking; almost Bristol-like in it's design orientation. Want to know an interesting fact about the P1800? A 1966 Volvo 1800S holds the Guiness World Record for highest miles driven in the same vehicle. Owner Irvin Gordon has been driving his

Geneva 2009: Koenigsegg Quant Concept

Well, as expected, new pictures, details and information on the Quant concept has been released . We first got word of the car last month a little less then two weeks ago when the company leaked a teaser of the front end. With the new releases we find out a lot of information we didn't know previously; very little details were supplied along with the original teaser photo. I'm in serious like! Look at that long, flowing side body line that morphs right into the front fenders. It's a very futuristic look that still manages to be beautiful, an undoubtedly hard feat for designers to pull off. Beautiful and futuristic usually don't go together in the same sentence. I don't know about you, but for me it's hard to believe that's a Koenigsegg design!  Hopefully,

Geneva 09: Koenigsegg Releases The Quant Teaser

Drip, drip, drip. Hear that? That's the sound of leaks. Now some more new information drops, this time from Switzerland, by away of specialty manufacturer Koenigsegg, who released a teaser of it's upcoming supercar dubbed "The Quant". There it is, that's about all we know on the new supercar from Koenigsegg. Unique name too, "The Quant". Unlike some other releases we've seen, no details have surfaced in recent months regarding a new vehicle from the company. The design is menacing and hunkered down; it projects an strikingly modern look that represents a departure for the brand. I'm interesting in learning whether or not it's a production vehicle. I hope it is! Koenigsegg has other things in store for the Geneva Show as well, including a new infotainment system for it's current offering the CCX
