Car Throttle News Bites: 17th February 2012

208gti-1

In News Bites today, we've got more Geneva Previews from Peugeot, Volvo and Audi, a special edition XK from Jaguar with the best seats ever, the new Kia Cee Apostrophe Dee, and an upcoming hot Ford engine that they better put in Caterhams. Remember the '84-'93 Peugot 205 GTI?  Peugeot hopes you do.  That iconic hot hatchback, a trailing-throttle-oversteering bastard from the days of the MkII Golf GTI, has pretty much ruined every Pug hot hatch since then by way of comparison.  Not necessarily in terms of raw performance: The fastest 205 GTI they ever made had a 1.9L 126bhp engine, meaning it might lose a stoplight drag race to a modern Corolla.  No, what journalists continually bang on about is that no Pug hatch since

KiaGT-1

In news bites today, we've got the new Audi RS4 Avant, Kia's upcoming RWD flagship, pricing on new Hyundais and BMWs, and new cars from Caterham and Audi, as well as Morgan.  Read on for all the details!   Three images of the new Audi RS4 Avant leaked out to Autoblog.nl and GTSpirit today, before it's official reveal at Geneva in April.  The RS4 Avant is the first RS variant of the new B8 Audi A4.  The rumor had been that the RS4 would use a higher-output version of the S4's 3.0L supercharged V6, somewhere around 400 horsepower, but apparently not - it's got the same 4.2L direct-injected V8 as found under the hood of the RS5, tuned to 450 horsepower.  It will come with a

So You Can’t Afford The R8? Check Out The Audi TT RS Plus

Audi-TT-RS-plus_1

One of the highlights of the Geneva Motor Show next month is the fastest Audi TT yet. The new TT RS Plus is exactly what it says on the boot lid: a TT RS plus more power, more torque and more speed. The original TT RS comes with a 2.5-litre, 5 cylinder direct injection petrol with 335bhp and 332 lb ft of torque which gives it a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds, the same as the standard R8, and a limited top speed of 155mph. That isn't enough for some people, though, so the Plus gets a revised inlet manifold and increased turbocharger boost to deliver 355bhp and 343lb ft of torque meaning the 0-62mph is down to 4.1 seconds with the S-tronic gearbox. That's just

Disappointment: Why BMW’s M1 Supercar Will Never Be Replaced

F10 BMW M5

BMW disappoint me. Sure they build fabulous performance cars like the BMW 1-Series M Coupe, the M3, the M5, and the to-be-built 552bhp BMW M6. But that's about it really. No gull-winged, bi-spoilered, extra wide arched, super-low supercars. This irks me as BMW are now, in my opinion, either too profit-oriented, politically correct, socially conscious or environmentally friendly for their own good. In a recent interview, BMW North America's Product Manager stated that the German brand doesn't feel the need to make a supercar and that they like to build practical cars that are drivers' cars and executive cars that one can use everyday. This thought is further cemented by the statement made by Albert Biermann, BMW M’s development chief who told Autocar last year that

2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S

Welcome back to News Bites, Car Throttle's one-stop-shop for the this-and-that of all that's auto news.  What's on the plate for today?  Track times, the President's old whip, Volvos, wrecking Datsuns, and some other fun stuff. Car and Driver is one of the few automotive print publications people still like, because they still produce some unique content.  Best example: the annual Lightning Lap challenge.  They take road-going cars, divided up into classes by price, for hot laps around Virginia International Raceway - street tires, pump gas, license plates and full interiors, to see what's fastest.  This year they didn't run any LL5 cars ($250,000+) or LLU (non-street-legal, like the Ariel Atom and KTM X-Box), but they did add a new class: LLT, for trucks.  There's a

Detroit 2012: Lexus LF-LC Concept Is Drool-Worthy

Lexus-LF-LC-side

Before a certain Mr. LFA was born, a typical Lexus owner would have been pushing 50 years old. A fact probably unsurprising given that all Lexus built a short while back were three saloons; small, medium, large and a convertible to top it off. All were quiet, comfortable, peaceful and they weren't in your face. To then improve their product range, the folks in Toyota City decided to add the same hybrid technology as Toyota's Prius into their cars to make one of the first 4x4 hybrids on the market. However just talking about the not-so-distant past of Lexus induces yawning from your good author. The future, on the other hand, looks very exciting indeed. 2009 saw the first IS-F, a 5.0L V8

The Other Other Benz: 2012 Volkswagen CC

cc front

One of the best niche body styles out there has to be the four-door coupe. First invented by Mercedes back in 2004, the idea was to make a car that looks as elegant as the CL but gives it the practicality and comfort of the E-Class and the resulting car was dubbed the CLS. There have been others since from Team Germany such as the Audi A7 and the up and coming BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. They're great if you have executive car money but what if you're bored of your humble Passat? The people's car manufacturer had this problem in mind when they created the Passat CC back in 2008 and now there's a new one. This time they've ditched the 'P' word for us
