New Owners Expect Saab To Be Profitable in 2011

Saab just recently was pulled from disappearance from the automotive scene by none other than Dutch supercar manufacturer Spyker. Interesting seeing another small sports car company purchasing the (comparatively) volume brand after the Koenigsegg deal fell through. The 2011 model lineup and pricing was just introduced, with the 9-5 surprising many with its price tag coming in near the $50k hurdle at $49,990. A four-cylinder turbo model is slated to be coming with a pricetag below the 40k mark. With this pricing, one thing was made clear to us at the time - Saab couldn't be expecting a high amount of volume. With manufacturers that are Saab's size, often a conundrum is created of not enough profit (due to economies of scale) to be made on volume vehicles and

Saab 9-5 Wagon Images Leak Out

It seems like everything about the Saab 9-5 takes a long time - the last generation was around forever and we've been hearing about this new generation model for quite some time. It wasn't even clear if it was even going to be produced or not at all. Recently, Saab released pricing information for the car, with the 9-5 Aero coming in at around the $50,000 mark. Now, new images have leaked of the wagon model. This isn't the first time this has happened either. The rendering shows a similar design to what we've seen before. In other words, just about the coolest wagon around. It isn't clear where this image came from, but it looks legitimate. Could a Saab 9-5 estate (SportCombi here in the United States)

U.S Pricing for Saab 9-5 Announced

Last year was a difficult year for the automotive industry - iconic brands being lost and lots of changes in the order of things. Porsche was bought up by Volkswagen, and over at GM Pontiac, Saturn, and now HUMMER have all disappeared. Saab was almost added to that list more than once, until an unlikely bid came from Spyker that saved the brand. Now, the car that everyone hopes will save the brand - the 9-5, is getting official pricing for the United States market. It is good to be talking product again! The 9-5 a product many thought would never get to see the light of day. Autoblog attended the opening of Saab's new U.S headquarters in Royal Oak, Michigan and while they were there,

GM Extends Saab Deadline?

OK, this wait is getting quite tiring. However, it is better than the alternative - shutting down Saab altogether. Current General Motors management is making an effort to get the brand sold rather than just shutting it down, and that is a good thing. One of the rumored reasons for the departure of GM's recent Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson is that he just wanted to shut down the brand, in opposition to the board. Now it seems as if the company is extending the deadline. Around the time of the Los Angeles International Auto Show, GM announced they would be considering bids for Saab until December 31st, 2009. Paul Akerlund, the head of the IF Metall trade union, is saying that the date is not in

Saab Gets $599 Million Loan from EIB

For General Motors, the sale of it's two European units, Saab and Opel, has been long and arduous. Magna International's purchase of Opel still hasn't been completed, but Koenigsegg's bid for Saab has going comparatively smooth so far. Koenigsegg's bid to purchase the brand just got a big boost with the announcement of a $599 loan for the company from the European Investment Bank. There were some reports that Koenigsegg's bid was meeting difficulties, but this loan should ensure the deal is completed. However there are still a number of approvals that have to be obtained from the Swedish government and European Union authorities. So, don't get too excited yet. Another interesting development that has occurred through this is China's Beijing Auto investment into Koenigsegg as a means

New Saab 9-5 Brochure

The Saab 9-5 has been a long time coming and with the current car lingering for years, the new model can't come soon enough. A lot has happened since the original car debuted - GM going through bankruptcy, a change in ownership. As expected, Saab has drawn out the introduction of the 9-5 for maximum coverage. James recently covered their release of specifications for the 9-5. When the original 9-5 debuted it was competitive with other luxury stalwarts in the class like the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Can the new one do the same thing? We'll see, for now all we can do is speculate. Saab has made a new PDF brochure about the 9-5 that puts all the information we've seen about the car

Saab Releases Official Specs on 2010 9-5

Excuse me for being excited, but it's been a while. And by a while, I mean 12 years.  And by "it" I mean the introduction of a new 9-5.  We've heard a lot about the car that is to save Saab (if anything will) here on CarThrottle, but Saab has finally put out it's official set of press releases for the new 9-5 and now we've got all the little details to share with you.  On paper at least it looks extremely promising in a lot of regards, but the proof's in the pudding...  or at least behind the wheel.  Still, get 'em while they're hot: new Saab 9-5 specifications! As you probably know, the new 9-5 sits on the Epsilon II chassis shared with the Opel

The Saab 9-5 is Official

While the Saab 9-5 has awaited a redesign (over a decade), the world has passed it by. While an impressive vehicle at launch, the current Saab 9-5 has understandably not wore well with age. The new 9-5 will perhaps be the critical vehicle for Saab's near term success. The sale to Saab to Koenigsegg from General Motors has nearly been finalized pending some funding deals, and the 9-5 will be the first vehicle to launch under new ownership. Can the new company make Saab a success? If product were the only thing that had to do with Saab's future success, I'd prospects with the 9-5 are looking pretty good. The 9-5 wears new but still recognizable Saab themes that were shown prominently on the Aero X Concept

Saab Begins Countdown to Official 9-5 Reveal

The Saab 9-5 is coming, the Saab 9-5 is coming! Yes, the car that everyone has been waiting on forever The 9-5 hasn't been competitive for years and it's high time for a change. The new 9-5 is that change, and it will be launched under new ownership. The GM-Koenigsegg deal has been pretty much finalized, I hope it all works out. With most important launches like the new 9-5, the manufacturer wants to keep everything under wraps until the very end. Unfortunately for Saab it didn't work out quite like that. In July the first leak came of a Saab-produced CGI. Then, Autozeitung and Autobild, not to be outdone, followed with full-on high-resolution images. Embargo breaking at it's finest! Now Saab has put up a counter

High Resolution Saab 9-5 Photos

The new Saab 9-5 has been a long time coming, with Saab enthusiasts eagerly awaiting bits of news and images on the car. Spy shots, renderings - I've covered them all. Saab is a company that has always been different than the usual, having a dedicated core of loyal buyers. Poor management has let the brand languish though, and the new 9-5 was been developed to put Saab back on the map again. German magazine Autozeitung opened the floodgates for Saab 9-5 information when it broke the 9-5 embargo in it's latest issue. Autobild followed with it's release of images and now Auto Motor Sport follows yet again with the first high-resolution images. When the Autobild released the images, I said I'd let you know when high-resolution images came out, and here they
