Buick has been dominating headlines lately – and thankfully, it is for all the right reasons. The introduction of the Buick Regal is a welcome change for the brand. The Regal is sourced from General Motors’ Opel, which was just announced that GM would be keeping.
In typical fashion for those in the automotive blogosphere, we’re always looking forward to the next thing – particularly when it comes to performance.
The standard Opel Insignia has been brought over as the Regal, but Opel also has the OPC (Opel Performance Center) performance model that many are pining for. Speculation about future Regal models has mainly centered around bringing that model over here as the Regal GNX.
Car & Driver talked to Bob Lutz about this possibility at the car’s recent unveiling. He said a manual-transmission model, an all-wheel drive option and an Insignia OPC-turned GNX (or whatever it will be called) 335-hp sports model.
In addition, C&D’s Steve Siler pressed Lutz about the possibility of bringing the Insignia Sports Tourer over – and in OPC/GNX guise! You know what is so remarkable about all of this – people are excited about Buicks!
GM absolutely needs to make a sport model of the Regal, as it will appeal to the younger audience that they are looking to attract. Imagine a full Regal lineup with a sedan and wagon (even coupe) all available in performance guises. That is the way to attract a new audience for Buick.
