If a McLaren F1 seems out of reach, think again. All you need is a spare £20k and eight years of dedication

Polish amateur mechanic Jacek Mazur had a bit of a dilemma. He wanted a McLaren F1, but as the usual cost for an F1 runs into the millions, buying one wasn’t an option. Instead, he built his own. It’s taken Jacek eight years to create this thing. He built the tubular space-frame chassis himself, and crafted a McLaren F1 lookalike body.

It even has the driver’s seat in the middle, and a mid-mounted BMW V12, like the real thing – sort of. It’ll allegedly do 200mph, but it’d take someone decidedly brave to do that sort of speed in something that’s been put together in a shed. The total cost came to a not unreasonable £20k, and while it looks a bit shoddy from some angles, it’s not that far off…

Seeing this made me realize how little I would actually enjoy a real McLaren. A replica can be abused and thrashed without having to worry about insurance premiums, ridiculous service bills, mud/rain, pot holes, parking lot scratches. If someone offered me either one I’d take the real McLaren….but I’d sell it and buy a few cars I could realistically enjoy with my humble income.

come on! If you can afford a real McLaren you just don´t worry a bout insurance premiums and ridiculous service bills. Also NOBODY EVER will give you a McLaren! :D

    built, not bought… literally

With the skill to build a car like that this guy should have made his own custom one off car. Awesome.

perfect job , looks like the real one from outside if you except the wheels. But i wonder how safe this thing and all the others replica are for road use? Its made from a bunch of pipes and a fiberglass body . If it crash with 50km/h it will become a thousand pieces. I dont want to think what will happen if it will crash near top speed !
