Ford Confirms “Coyote” V-8

Ford Confirms “Coyote” V-8

A bit of good performance news for Ford fans!  Maybe the Pony Car wars still have life left in them yet. You would have thought that these programs would be cancelled or at least put on hold like GM’s elusive “Zeta” RWD platform program, but Ford is continuing on.

They’re smart in recognizing that there will always be a market for such products. Ford is using foresight and that is why it is in the better position that it is today in comparison with it’s domestic (and indeed foreign!) competition.

Ford Mustang mules were spotted in January with a new engine under the hood. No official word from Ford was out to alert anyone of a new engine. But just recently in an interview with Australia’s Drive Ford development director Russell Christophers revealed the existence of the engine, named “Coyote”.

This new 5.0L engine would replace Ford’s 4.6L and 5.4L V-8′s, consolidating the two into one engine. Sources say the engine makes 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, which would help the Mustang better compete with the Camaro.

Expect to see the new 5.0L “Coyote” V-8 debut in 2011, doing duty in the Mustang and the F-150, boosting horsepower and torque while increasing fuel economy. Sounds like a win win to me! Now bring on EcoBoost!

Can you imagine if Ford slots an EcoBoost lump under the hood of most of their models? I think that would be incredible. MPGs for those who want them, but power potential for those who enjoy driving. Seems like a smart move to me!

a V6 EcoBoost Mustang with IRS would be NO JOKE

too bad about that live axle, though.
