News Bites: Chicago Auto Show Edition

Tracksterintro

The Chicago auto show is upon is, which means... well, some facelifts, some new models, but not huge news like Detroit or Geneva.  Still, new stuff!   Inside: Two new Acuras, perhaps the world's most powerful 4-seat production convertible, minor facelifts for a Datsun, a big ol' GMC, and a sweet new Kia they need to make pronto.  Oh, and some bad news on Fisker. Acura officially debuted two new production cars - the ILX (pictured above) and the new RDX.  The ILX takes over for both the Canadian-market CSX sedan (Civic based), and will replace the US-market TSX sedan (Euro Accord-based) as Acura's entry-level model.  Why don't they call it the Integra?  Dunno.  Power comes from three sources.  The base model has a 2.0L I4

Hyundai Adds Coupe and GT Hatchback to Elantra Range

intro

The Chicago auto show is here, and one of the first reveals is the new Hyundai Elantra Coupe, as well as the GT hatchback.  While the GT Hatchback isn't exactly new (more on that in a minute), the Elantra Coupe is. Designed to compete with the Civic Coupe and the Kia Forte Koup, the Elantra 2-door takes Hyundai's "fluidic sculpture" into a sportier package.  It's a good looking car in my eyes, with a traditional coupe roofline and an abbreviated, swoopy tail. With how well US sales of the new Elantra have gone (have you noticed they're everywhere?) it makes sense that Hyundai would expand the lineup with some additional models - and a coupe and hatchback are probably a good place to start, considering corporate

SuperAds: Why I Watch The Super Bowl At All

loldog

To be totally honest, I'm more interested in Hybrid fuel economy than football.  Maybe there was something weird in the water where I grew up, or maybe I just agree with Ernest Hemmingway: "There are three real sports: mountain climbing, bull fighting, and car racing.  Everything else is just games." Regardless, I hard it find to fake enthusiasm for the Super Bowl.  This year some overpaid athletes in spandex played against some other overpaid athletes in Spandex for the title of something.  Yay.  But I don't need to fake my enthusiasm for the advertisements.  Manufacturers spend vast sums of money to get ads in the superbowl; it's the highest-viewed event every year in the US, but at $3.5M USD per 30-second spot, they try especially hard

Raleigh Cars & Coffee, 4th February 2012

IMG_1203

Cars and Coffee is always an opportunity to see both the newest, coolest stuff (the first Nissan Leaf I saw was at Cars & Coffee) and some old classic iron as well.  It seems like each month there's a "star," a car that people crowd around to get their first good glimpse of.  Guess what it was this month? If you guessed it was the Fisker Karma, you'd be correct.  There was a crowd around the Finnish-built extended-range electric vehicle like flies around a pile of rotten fruit.  Errr, bad metaphor.  And if that looks like a GM LNF (which I really need to stop writing about), that's because it is.  This is the first Karma I've seen in the flesh, and the overall impression

DartGTS

News Bites for today include Dodge's hot Dart,  Audi's new diesel, teaser shots of the upcoming 2013 Dodge Viper, some good ole' fashioned intellectual property theft, an electric crossover thing, and Super Bowl advertisements from Audi and Honda.  Read on for the News Bites! Dodge's Dart subcompact was just revealed a few weeks ago, but we've already got two pieces of future speculation on where the lineup could expand.  First, Mopar will be bringing a concept Dart to the Chicago Auto Show, called the Dart GTS 210 Tribute.  It previews the two "stages" of Mopar upgrades for the new sedan.  Stage 1 will be aesthetic goodies, like the carbon fiber hood with Viper-esque scoop, and matte black side skirts, front diffuser, and other trim - along

2012 Scion iQ Test Drive: The Smarter Smart

iqintro

Make a tiny two-door city car, and name it the iQ.  That is pretty clearly a shot at the Smart car, right off the bat - it would be like Chevy releasing a special edition Camaro called the "it's faster than Shelby."  So how smart is Toyota's Smart?  What's its iQ, to stretch the pun?

Are you looking at my butt?

The iQ has the odd distinction of being the smallest four-seater in America.  And small it is: it's 119.9" long overall, which is one-tenth of an inch shorter than the wheelbase of the Chrysler 300 I just recently reviewed.  It's 13" longer than a Smart ForTwo, but it does have back seats- and only 5" additional wheelbase.  It's 20" shorter than a

Blues vs. Skittles: Cobalts vs. Neons Dyno Day

IMG_0906-2

The automotive world is filled with rivalries.  STI owners think EVO drivers are mentally handicapped, Mustang owners laugh at Camaros, Prius drivers have those "pissing on Insight" stickers, and Holden owners like to pull Ford drivers out of their cars at stoplights and beat them to death with pipe wrenches.  Another to add to the list: Cobalt SS and Neon SRT-4 owners.  On the surface, both cars are pretty similar: high performance versions of domestic economy cars, with drastically more power and braking abilities and not a lot of interior luxuries.  I love both; I love the Cobalt SS Turbo more. One way to settle the whole argument is to quit the bullshitting and bench racing, assemble some teams, slap them on a dyno (or

Feature: David Whitley’s Stanced Nissan 350Z

IMG_0756

If you've been following some of the car shows I attend, you'll notice a recurring trend: cars so low, with so much wheel and so much camber and so little ground clearance, posing as race cars.  I'm not sure if this has caught on in every area of the world, but here in the 'States the "stance" movement is huge.  I personally am more about functionality than form - I would go nuts if my car scraped constantly - but even I'll admit that it's a great look. Still, I wanted to wrap my head around this stance thing a bit better, so a feature was in order.  Thankfully I've got a friend who's well versed in the "low life," David Whitley.  His '03 350Z

BMW Launches M Performance Brand With Monster Diesels

m550dintro

The M Performance line is intended to fit in between regular production BMW's, and the full-fat M models (M3, M5, 1M Coupe, etc).  Sort of like S-Line Audis, R-Design Volvos, and AMG Package Benzes, but with a catch: all four M Performance models that are coming to the Geneva Show in March are powered by diesels. Go cry in your beer if you want, but I'm not joking about the "Monster diesel" part.  Case in point: BMW's 4.4L twin-turbo V8 as seen in the 550i, 650, 750i, etc makes a healthy 400 horsepower and 440lb-ft of torque.  This new 3.0L I6 diesel going into these models makes 381bhp and 546lb-ft of torque.  Yes, five hundred forty six, or 740nM if you prefer that scale.  That's

2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S

Welcome back to News Bites, Car Throttle's one-stop-shop for the this-and-that of all that's auto news.  What's on the plate for today?  Track times, the President's old whip, Volvos, wrecking Datsuns, and some other fun stuff. Car and Driver is one of the few automotive print publications people still like, because they still produce some unique content.  Best example: the annual Lightning Lap challenge.  They take road-going cars, divided up into classes by price, for hot laps around Virginia International Raceway - street tires, pump gas, license plates and full interiors, to see what's fastest.  This year they didn't run any LL5 cars ($250,000+) or LLU (non-street-legal, like the Ariel Atom and KTM X-Box), but they did add a new class: LLT, for trucks.  There's a
